It Was Fall
Pillar 1 — Identity & Personal Power
Story · Part 1
It was fall, and school was starting back. The air felt different—cooler, sharper, full of beginnings. My friends and I sat outside my house, laughing about summer and imagining the year ahead: classes, clubs, Homecoming. Everything felt possible.
Bobby and I had been together since sixth grade.
He was steady and kind—
the kind of person who didn’t need attention to be solid.
When I felt unsure, he’d smile and say, “You’re good. You’ve got this,”
and somehow, I always believed him.
Then school got busy. New people. New energy. At lunch one day, a friend brought over a new guy.
“This is Trey. He just transferred. Basketball team.”
Trey stood there smiling—confident, easy, magnetic. He laughed easily. He looked right at you when you talked, like you mattered. And suddenly, the whole table felt different.
Being around Trey made everything feel brighter. Faster. Louder. When he invited me to a party after a big win, I felt chosen. The music was thumping, the room buzzing, and when he asked me to dance, my heart raced. I was suddenly aware of how close he was, how good it felt to be noticed. I was a little gooey-eyed, a little dizzy. Not thinking clearly—just feeling.
Kat raised her eyebrows later, and we laughed. But inside, something had already shifted.
Homecoming was coming. It was expected I’d go with Bobby—just like always. He even asked what color I was wearing so he could rent a tux. He sounded calm. Certain.
Then one afternoon after practice, Trey caught up to me.
“Would you want to go to Homecoming with me?”
My stomach flipped. My brain stalled. I asked for a day to think, but the truth was—I was already imagining it. The lights. The attention. The way it would look.
That night, I lay awake, restless. Bobby felt safe and familiar. Trey felt exciting and new. My heart was loud. My values were quiet. I didn’t know how to tell the difference.
Reflection Pause
What Would You Do?
Pause here for a moment.
Before you know what happens next, take a breath and think about where things stand.
No one is asking you to judge anyone—or decide what’s “right.”
This is just a chance to notice how you think about choices.
You might wonder:
What feels exciting right now?
What feels steady or trustworthy?
If you were in this moment, what would matter most to you?
Would you choose what feels good… or what feels right?
How do you usually decide when your feelings and your values don’t line up?
There’s no answer you have to give out loud.
You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone.
Just notice.
This pause is here to remind you:
Choices shape who you are becoming—especially the ones you make before you know how things turn out.
When you’re ready, continue the story.
